A small pebble-and-rock cove with gently shelving turquoise water. A first swim at seven in the morning, a last one at nine at night.
Island of Pag · Croatia · 44.47° N
One white studio on the edge of a holm-oak reserve. One terrace, two guests, and the whole of Pag Bay in front of you.
The studio
The studio sits on steep rocks inside the Dubrava–Hanzine reserve, the only forested stretch around the town of Pag. In front: Pag Bay, and across the water the grey wall of the Velebit mountains.
Inside it is white, bright and simple. One large room with a proper kitchen, a comfortable double bed, a bathroom, and windows that frame nothing but sea. Outside, a long terrace with loungers, a grill and an open-air solar shower under the reeds.
There is no reception and no lobby. Irena and Robi hand you the key.
The bay in numbers
Pag Bay is shallow and sheltered, so it warms faster than the open Adriatic. From June to October the water stays above 20 °C.
Approximate long-term averages for the Pag–Zadar coast.
Location
The house stands on the south-western shore of Pag Bay, inside a 3.5 km ribbon of holm oak along the old Pag–Novalja road. Close enough to reach a bakery or a ferry without planning the day around it, far enough that the loudest thing you hear is the sea.
Beaches & sea
This stretch of Pag Bay is shallow, clear and sheltered. That is a rare combination on an island better known for its wind.
50 m from the doorA small pebble-and-rock cove with gently shelving turquoise water. A first swim at seven in the morning, a last one at nine at night.
IncludedThe bay is full of little coves you can only reach from the water. Go out in the morning while the sea is still glass.
NearbyTwo more beaches along the same shore, shaded by the oak reserve. The rock at Crnika holds marine fossils some twenty million years old.
Wind & waterPag Bay gets one of the most reliable afternoon thermal winds in the Adriatic. Under the surface: rock ledges full of fish.
≈ 8 kmA Renaissance grid of white stone, the old salt pans, Pag cheese and lamb, and Pag lace, on the UNESCO intangible heritage list.
Day tripsAcross the channel: the Velebit range and the canyons of Paklenica National Park. To the north: Novalja and the sandy beaches of the island's tip.
Whether I was enjoying breakfast overlooking the Adriatic or having a romantic dinner under the stars, staying at this apartment was an absolute delight.
